My first contest is coming up in April... I have no clue on how to design a posing routine, let alone what type of music to choose to go with it. Could someone lay out the basics of what a good posing routine should include? And any recommendations for good music to pose too would be great... I am not 300lbs, so I don't want to pose to music like "2001 space oddessy"
Thanks |

First thing you have to do is make sure you have your poses down pat. You don't want to look sloppy and have to think about them. You also want to pose to accentuate your strengths and hide your weaknesses. The mirror will help with that.
Ok, first I would say to pick music that you really like. The posing routine is more or less your time to shine and show your creativity. The main thing to look for is how the beat hits. It has to flow and flow so that you can make smooth transitions into the next pose. It makes more sense if you can get your hands on videotape of shows. Look at an amateur show as well as a pro show. That should give you a good idea of what looks smooth and natural and what looks like it was put together while the guy/girl is up there. And I've seen amateurs who put together routines better than the pros. It's all how creative you are. My main piece of advice is to stay away from "sweet love songs". Don't put the audience to sleep or play some slow crap. Even the biggest guys don't get much reaction out of that. But a fast paced routine where you hit your poses and have music that doesn't make you want to take a nap will get the audience on your side. A lot of the best routines are done to hip hop songs because they have a good, but solid, beat. But a good rock song will get the audience going to. But be weary of songs like Thunderstruck and Welcome to the Jungle because they've been overdone. Of course if you're creative you can make a good routine out of almost anything. And don't forget ,if you have the tools, you can combine songs and make a good transition that way. But enough of my ramblings. Good luck.

Good advice,I agree that the mandatories are VERY important.I can't tell you how many people I've seen with great physiques ,look like crap because they don't know how to pose.I also tend to stay away from the most recent songs out because of the high likelyhood of several people using the same song and stealing your thunder! You can go with one song cut at 90sec or I sometimes do a 30sec cut of 3 blended together. If this is your 1st show,I'd recommend just one song so you don't have to much to think about.Pick a song with a medium paced beat, until you've done a few shows, and just have fun.But it really comes down to mandatories, because if you screw up on your routine, don't stop, just mix all your mand. in.Good luck!

better get going bro...you need time to pratice. Try a mix if you're comfortable....they allow the audience to keep getting into the routine and it give you a chance to hit 2or 3 peaks in the routine instead of one. My next routine is gonna have about 6 songs mixed in it.
I'll give you all a hint of who I am at Jr's...when it's dark and you hear a whisper going...."let the bodies hit the floor....." You'll know who Buff D is on stage. |
