Glutamine is an amino acid important for optimal muscle protien metabolism. During stress glutamine is released from skeletal muscle to support immune functions. The flow of glutamine out of muscles makes protein synthesis more difficult and can lead to muscle protien degradation. Supplementing with glutamine between meals is believed to improve muscle growth and overall health. Glutamine is most effective when consumed on an empty stomach or mixed with a low fat protien shake. (pg.765)
The immune systems primary food is glutamine. Intensive training puts a high level of stress on the body, and as soon as you begin exercising you begin to exhaust your body's supply of glutamine. One of the natural results of increasing the level of your exercise regimen is that you may find yourself becoming more susceptible to illness. Several natural substances (mainly of plant origin) will help your body resist infections or at least cope with them more efficiently. Needless to say, the first thing that you should supplement is glutamine. Among the substances and preparations that can help you are echinacea, ginseng, amino acid glutamine, vit. C, and polyphenols. (pg.790)
