State police: two-year investigation breaks drug ring
The Associated Press
March 10, 2005
A two-year investigation broke a ring that counterfeited steroids and impotence drugs and sold them by mail. A Houma man, his son and a woman were arrested, state police said Thursday.
Agents who arrested Eddie Matherne, 50, found a makeshift drug laboratory, including a pill press, on the second floor of his apartment, Trooper Matt Trahan said.
He said they also found nearly 20,000 steroid pills and capsules, 2,400 of a drug which boosts the body's testosterone production, and 4,400 pills and capsules of a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The pills and capsules counterfeited at least seven brand-name drugs, Trahan said.
He said investigators also found 11 large bottles or containers of drug ingredients, 15.2 pounds of an unknown substance, 727 small bottles of liquid steroids, 4,300 unmarked pills and an unknown number of pills thought to be tranquilizers, which are being tested.
Matherne, his son, Todd Matherne, 24, and Celeste Gautreaux, 24, were booked Monday with illegally making drugs and possessing drugs with intent to distribute them, Trahan said.
The arrests were not made public until Thursday because investigators were following up leads until late Wednesday, he said.
