I was recentyl chatting away with a buddy of mine when we bumped on the subject of best home defense dogs........these are also known as Guard Dogs. Dont get it confused with an Alarm Dog, this are dogs that just bark and can actually do nothing else to defend its castle. The definition of a Guard Dog is just that, a dog that can attack someone invading its home.

Well, me being from the hood, you know the top 2 breeds on our list....Pitbulls and Rottis. lol My friend is into the conventional Germans Shepards and Dobermans. What breed of dog would you trust to guard your home?

Cardi,
the police use a dog called a Belgium Malamois, or sumthin like that. It's like a wiry Shepherd. Fast as hell and easy to train. But for a home protection dog, give me a German Shepherd. Big and strong with knock-down power when they jump on yo azz!

dobermans are pretty mean fuckers. i don't know much of dogs, but i have known a few people who have had dobermans. i do know that, if trained well, can be very loyal to their owners. they are also very protective of them. dude...everytime i would go to their homes...i thought my balls and throat was in jeopardy. they had to hold their dogs collars and tell them that i was a friend. sometimes they would have to put the dogs in another room. none of the dobermans would accept me even after seeing me quite a bit. it was almost as if they forgot who or what i looked like everytime.

like i said...i don't know much of dogs, and this is just my personal experience with dobermans.

LMAO!!!
Thats the truth bro...even if there owners vouch for you the Dobie doesnt care. I've been into dogs for a long time and form time to time train them.....there are certain breeds that people should stay away from unless they have had actually experience with other dogs. These dogs tend to dominate and want to be the Alpha Male, you hav to be sturdy and consistent........these dogs being Dobies, Rotties, Mastiffs, and others.

English Mastiff would be my choice. they are very protecitve of family and if you have a male from a good line, it'll probably weigh 225lbs or more. when a dog that out weighs most guys lets you know your not welcome, its pretty effective for keepin people from messin with your shit.

Lets not forget the Aikida; and Sharpia sp? both or easy to train and can be nasty as hell.

My Rotts have always done me right. Even though my male was behind a fence, he ran off some little fuggers that tried to get to my car stereo. ....just something about the sound of a pissed off Rott slamming a fence.... trying to get his teeth into you.

From experience..... I am a FIRM Mastiff believer. I have both the Bull Mastiff and the Dogue De Bourdeau (French Mastiff), you know the Turner and Hooch dog. But anyway, I have had the Bourdeau trained in protection, but no the Bull Mastiff, these dogs have a natural tendency to be protective of the home and family. Sometimes overly protective.

The one thing that I love about these dogs is that they are extremely family oriented. You have to treat them like a human, because they are one of the family. But all in all, I have had the Rotti, Shepard and I know that they are awesome dogs, but I like the family oriented aspect of the Mastiffs.

So whatever dog you choose, make sure you do your homework.

I personally haven't owned anything that would be considered protective, unless a beagle dog could save you from the invasion of rabbits, but I'd say it would harm a fly. I know people that had Rotts and Dobermans and I'd go with either of them, because it's all in how you train them. You can make a dog as mean as you want of as nice as you want, but it always helps if it's in thier bloodline.

I'd have to give Dobermans my choice as top gaurd dog, for the reasons already stated. Personally I doubt I'd pick a Doberman though just for those reasons, sure they can be extremely loyal to the master, but thats it. They're mean ass fucking dogs to everyone else. I wouldn't even trust one with my kid(if I had one). Me I'd go with a German Shepard or Great Dane. Great gaurd and family dogs.

I have a mixed breed. With all of my kids, I didn't want anything that would not be detremental to them or my family. For this reason I thought Chocolate Lab. But I also didn't want a pussy dog either so I was thinking a good protective family dog like a Pit. So I got real lucky and went with the happy medium. Ginger is half Choc lab and half Pit. On top of being beautiful as hell, She is the perfect family dog. She is great to strangers if we are around and will not let them walk out the door unless we walk them to the door. She a great dog.

I have grown up with huskies and Dobes my entire child life. Both were great family dogs. The coolest thing is when the dobe and husky mated. There is nothing nastier looking than a Doberman with ice blue eys.

Big mastiffs are the way to go. I have a German mastiff, AKA Great Dane, (bet you didn't know they weren't from Denmark) that people walk across the street to get away from. Very intimidating, the cable guy was shaking whe he was here. lol Great guard dogs, great with kids, funny as hell and will bite off your arm if you try to get in.

The only problem with some of the mentioned dogs is, if you own your home, or have insurance on your apartment or what have you, there are exclusions when owning any of the mentioned breeds. Dobermans, Rotts, Pits, etc.

Like for me back home, I have the Bull Mastiff and my American Staffordshire Terrier at one home, and my parents have the Dogue De Bourdeau at their home. The home owners insurance doesn't know about the Am Staff in the house because under their guidelines, that dog is not covered and if they found out, they drop you like a bad habit. But the Bull Mastiff is covered, so if she bites anyone, the policy will pay out if they have to.

Keep this in mind, I am an animal lover to the fullest, but there are asswipes out there who don't like them, come to your home and do stupid shit, get bitten, then sue you for $250,000.00 and usually get the judgement. So now you have a lien against all your crap until you pay this moron, the money.

Its a damn shame, but this must be taken into consideration when making these choices.

I have a path that runs down the side of my house right up against my back yard fence. Well every once in awlie I hear the dogs going nuts and find some dumbass teenager teasing my dogs. I'm putting up a 6 ft fence this summer because I dont want to get sued.
Plus last year some scumbag was hanging over my fence swinging a stick at my dogs. His friends saw me coming in time to run but he didnt. Lets just say he'll think twice in the future before ever doing that agian. :)

I have owned multiple dobermans. I have also had alot of experience with alot of other lets say "gaurd" type dogs. dobermans in my opinion are the smartest, loyal, and at times vicious dogs I have met. those things are beasts. I will relate to you a story of mine. It was about 9 o clock my friend and I were walking up the hill to my house, my doberman was on his leash with my dad on the other end. he was wearing an elctric collar. he pulled my dad (180 lol like 35 bf%) through the front yard. he broke his leash (one inch thick) and broke through the electric fence on a dead sprint, and sunk his teeth into his thigh. we ended up giving giving him back to the breader because he was too defensive, thyre great lap dogs, but just for the owners...

I think rotties, german shephards, and dobermans are all an excellent choice. Germans have used all three as police dogs. Make sure they have a good german background. When it comes to breeding dogs for gaurding or security....germans have it mastered. I have a rottie and a shephard. The breeds are very different but both are effective. Better protection at home than a gun. I'll feel sorry for anyone ever attempting to break into my property!!

i have a 10 month old english mastiff. hes a small 155 right now. actually i dont know his weight anymore since he weighs more than the scale at the vet and he outweighs my personal scale (with me on it too). He is a gentle giant, bigger already than the dog in the previous pic. he does attempt to protect though with his loud deeeep ferocious bark but has never attempted to try tp protect us from anything. i mess with him a lot like when he is on the hardwood floors i will get in a staring contest with him then jump at him and he tries to run off as fast as he can but cant move. its funny as hell. i have no doubt that he will attempt to protect me and my family (when i decide to expand it) but i dont know how good he will be. hell he snores so damn loud he wouldnt hear someone break in

I looked at dogs today at the Humane Society~had one all picked out and filled out the app. Went to get my son to show him and we ended up spending some time with him because they have a rule that they have to keep them for 5 days after they're brought in. Thank God they do cuz otherwise I would have had to see if I could return the damn thing. It was like someone stuck the energizer bunny up it's ass and had his jaw on repeat~little shit didn't stop biting and there was no stopping it from running and jumping. I asked the lady who worked there if that was beyond normal puppy hyper and she said "waaaaaay beyond, it's not growing out of the hyper stage~it's gotta be part terrier from the way it's acting."

If you want to get a pure dog that isn't mass bred like most of the dogs you see in the US, go to Finland.

My Doberman (now my exwife's doberman) was the smartest dog I've had. Solid muscle at 95 lbs. It learnt all the basic comands; sit, stay, down, come, bite, drop, fetch at 8 weeks old.

I looked at Great danes aswell (before I knew how great they really are), and went to see a breeder in the east side, about 30 miles from Russia. I drove up and 7 huge heads and paws poped over a six foot high fence. The breeder only had females and none were forsale as they were her breeding stock. It would be to late for me when the pups came out. Anyway these "female" great danes stood well over six feet tall on there hind legs and were about 90 kilos. She let them loose and I swear it was like being in the middle of a stampede. These also weren't the prettiest danes either, they were twice a thick as the one I had and their face was more saggy, napoleon mastiff like. These danes were the really deal and were bred to kill wild boars.

No I believe that the biggest dogs in length/height are Great Danes, I had a female growing up she was huge. I still remember going to the breeder a few towns over with my folks and seeing the male Dane who was easily twice as big as the females. Their excellent dogs.

I have had allot of experience deeling with animals, (dogs in particular).... I would take an Alaskan Malamute over anything. Malamutes and Huskies are the closest domestic breed to a full blown wolf. Huskies are good too, but a malamute is like a husky on steroids. They get really big and bulky, and are unbelievably strong!

I think we may all be partial to what type of dogs we are familiar with and grew to love. I personally have always been around champion bloodline german sheperds. That is what I personally like due to my past experiences with my dogs growing up and now at home with my own kids. I dont have any pictures here at work of my dog, but here is a picture of my dogs father I got off of the company's website where I bought him. http://www.heidelberg-usa.com/ I think queen made an outstanding point when she said it does'nt matter what type of breed the dog is, if he loves you he will protect you. Something like that.

I have american bulldogs (hybrid performance bloodlines) all of my dogs come from proven working stock and must be competitive themselves. Both of my males are the result of breedings of ranked irondog champions (also a few schutzhund titles and other protection titles). The dog must pass both a obedience and protection test before being allowed to enter. The event is as follows:
1)50 yard Sprint Race (speed)
2) Hardest Hitting (protection & drive)
3) Weight Pull (strength)
4) Tug of War (power)
5) Hangtime (stamina)
6) 12-mile Endurance Test (conditoning)

http://www.irondog.biz/index.html

Irondog is a sport that was created to test the strength, endurance, power, speed, and courage of the dogs competing.

Irondog has recently been opened up to all breeds and welcomes any who think that their dog can compete. Irondog is a crowd pleaser and it doesn’t take a ton of training IF you have an athletic dog with drive and a desire to please it’s master.

The events are held nation wide. take a look at the breeds that are not only able to complete the pentathlons but are ranked competitors. Almost ALL American Bulldogs with a few pits and an occasional presa.

Am I biased? Yep, but i have the background to back it up. I have worked K9 in law enforcement, trained dogs for personal protection companies and supervised breeding programs of a few of the so called protection breeds over the years. Ive owned or trained everything from malinios to rotts, some good some bad.

The day after successsfully competing in the last irondog i entered my male in a hog catching event and he nailed & held a 150# boar. If you want a hardcore dog, the performance bred hybrid (not Johnson line) American bulldog is the K9 combat athlete king.

I think the question here is not which dog is best. I have a trained german shephard and a rottie. My logic is this, dogs have only one weapon, their mouths. When I was scrawny 6'4" 190, I had to choke out a pit bull that grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go. Fortunately I had a winter coat on and didn't get shredded that bad. My point is any good sized guy should be able to choke out one wicked gaurd dog, granted there will be injuries. But it takes one bad S.O.B. to take two dogs. Bottom line, if you're serious about home defense get a pair of whatever you choose.

I gotta say I'd go with a pair of Cane Corsos, bred originally by the roman army as a guard and fighting dog, These are the four legged sentrys that protected the soldiers camps and estates while they were away. Good bloodlines can get you in the 200lbs neighborhood no problem and they essentialyl look like a HUGE pitbull but are more even tempered. Right now my roommates and I have a pitbull and an akita/german shepard mix they make quite a pair and I never worry about leaving the house.
